| Definition | Impregnation is a penetrating treatment of solid porous substances, such as dissolved, emulsified or dispersed substances, the impregnating agents. After evaporation or drying of the solvent or dispersion medium, the applied substances impart modified use properties to the treated materials. This allows new fields of application to be developed. In construction, impregnation means the impregnation of building materials with water-repellent agents to protect the building materials against damaging water absorption. The various methods of impregnation in wood are dipping, spraying and kettle pressure impregnation, see also wood protection methods.
