| Definition | Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and extracorporeal lung assist (ECLA) are intensive care techniques in which a machine partially or completely takes over the respiratory function of patients. It is used in patients whose lungs are severely damaged and no longer allow gas exchange to the extent necessary to ensure respiratory function. It is often used in newborns suffering from lung damage (respiratory distress syndrome, meconium aspiration, persistent pulmonary hypertension) or certain congenital heart defects. ECMO is a form of extracorporeal organ replacement therapy and is also known as Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS). The ECMO can provide sufficient oxygenation for days or weeks, giving the lungs time to heal without aggressive ventilation |
