| Definition | Enteral nutrition is understood as a special form of so-called artificial nutrition in which the still available, functioning gastrointestinal tract is used. It is designed for people who have a lack of or limited ability to maintain adequate nutrition. A distinction is made between tube-fed nasogastric tubes or percutaneous tubes and liquid food directly in the stomach or small intestine, and drinking food. The latter is a liquid iso or high calorie diet taken orally - for patients who still have adequate swallowing. For the application of tube feeds - in addition to the food container - even medical aids such as the tubes themselves, systems for the transfer line of liquid food, special syringes and possibly adapters necessary.
