The development of ECLASS Release 17.0 is progressing. Change Requests for the new ECLASS version can be submitted until September 22, 2026. At the same time, the new release is growing considerably: It is expected to include around 5,300 new classes, 650 new properties, and a completely new segment for waste and processing residues.

How can NAMUR's technical product descriptions be integrated into Asset Administration Shells without modeling existing standards and properties twice? IDTA and ECLASS are exploring this question together with industry representatives. The aim is to use ECLASS Properties to reference the properties and thereby enable an interoperable AAS submodel.

ECLASS is currently in the application process for a liaison with ISO/IEC JTC 5 “Digital Product Passport.” In this interview, Anida Nedzibovic, Consultant Standardization Engineering at the ECLASS Head Office in Cologne, explains the opportunities this creates for ECLASS and its members.

At BSH in Munich, the ECLASS committees CRD and OpArm discussed the strategic direction and next development steps for the ECLASS Standard. The meeting focused on advising the ECLASS Board, planning activities for 2027, and publishing technical specifications. For ECLASS and BCON², this opens the door to hosting product group specific submodels, including those tied to the Digital Product Passport, in a dedicated repository that Axon can link to directly. Once the planned BCON² API goes live, ECLASS users could find the right DPP submodel for their product group without leaving the ECLASS ecosystem. One connection, standardized data, less searching.

The digital representation of complex industrial systems requires a methodical two-part approach: the structural decomposition of the physical product and its subsequent semantic standardization.

Repairability, recycled content, and recyclability need to be available as analyzable product data throughout supply chains. The DIN EN 18364 draft standard establishes important foundations for this. Companies and experts can comment on the draft through the DIN Draft Standards Portal until September 10, 2026.
